Texel, pronounced as Tes-sel, is the largest and most populated island of the Dutch Islands located in the Wadden Sea. The Island is situated about 3 km north of the coast of Noord-Holland, and Texel is about 25 km long and 9 km wide.
Texel has beautiful white-sand beaches, an iconic lighthouse (153 steps: rewarded with sweeping views) and the distinctive dune landscape is a unique habitat for wildlife. Notable areas include De Slufter, a brackish wetland, where the tide comes in and meets the dunes, forming a swampy unique ecosystem rich in both fauna and flora. Sheep and at the time of the conference also lamb, are everywhere across the Island, producing both the famous local wool and cheese. The cyclists (road and MTB) amongst us will be delighted as well, as there are enough routes to keep you entertained for days on end.
